Many medications, vitamin supplements and herbal remedies can interfere with each other and cause problems while in the presence anesthesia. It is necessary to disclose anything that you take daily or regularly, and have taken in the past months including:

• Prescription Medications
• Over‐the‐Counter Medications
• Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
• Herbal or “Natural” Supplements and Remedies
• Essential Oils
• Recreational Drugs (even if consumed only once in the past 3 months)

You should create a list of any of the previously listed items and give it to your doctor and anesthesiologist. Be sure to include anything taken in the past 3 months as some chemicals remain in the body for long periods of time.

Your surgeon will instruct you to avoid any products containing aspirin or ibuprofen for at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to surgery. These products inhibit blood clotting and can cause excessive bleeding during and after surgery.

If you smoke, you must stop at least 2 to 3 weeks before surgery and do not start again until 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Smoking reduces the body’s ability to circulate blood effectively and will slow the healing process.

This is a list, though not a complete one, of medications you should avoid before your surgery. Remember to give your surgeon and anesthesiologist a list of all the medications, vitamin and mineral supplements, and any other substance you use regularly or have used in the past 3 months. This will ensure your safety during the operation.
