radiesseOf the many injectable fillers offered in our office, Radiesse® is one of the newest. Radiesse® is manufactured and distributed by BioForm Medical and was approved by the FDA in 2006 for treatment of facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and facial lipoatrophy (loss of facial volume associated with HIV). Considered the next generation cosmetic dermal filler, Radiesse® provides immediate results by adding volume and gives long lasting effects by stimulating the body to produce new collagen for a natural look.

Radiesse® uses a unique calcium based microsphere technology that stimulates the growth of new collagen. The CaHA microspheres (particles) form a scaffold that stimulates a patient’s own collagen production for new tissue in-growth. The microspheres are encased in a gel carrier that provides immediate volume. Over time, the gel carrier is absorbed while collagen starts to grow and infiltrate the areas, replacing the gel with natural tissue. The Radiesse® microspheres continue to provide the support and structure for your body to grow new tissue and collagen until the microspheres are safely and naturally absorbed into your body. It is this process that classifies this filler as semi-permanent.

Radiesse® works like a lattice fence designed to support a climbing vine. The gel carrier forms the initial fence which would allow the vine to grow, well supported. As time passes, the fence dissolves but the vine is well established. This well established vine is the patient’s own collagen increase in the dermal layer which continues to give added density to the dermal layer creating a more youthful facial contour.

radiesse-deep-wrinkle-fillerCaHA is a biomaterial with over twenty years of use in orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry, and ophthalmology, and is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth. Radiesse is synthetic CaHA that has similar characteristics to bone and teeth, and is naturally compatible with the body. Radiesse® produces an immediate fill and long-term soft tissue augmentation, that lasts, on average, a year or more. This makes it one of the most versatile FDA-approved fillers available today.

In the office of Dr. Stefanacci, we use Radiesse® to add volume to the cheeks, fill deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines, sculpt the nose and jawline, softly and subtly giving a liquid face lift in the office in about an hour. Topical and injectable anesthetics are used to insure patient comfort and downtime is relatively minor to moderate. The most significant side effect is temporary bruising and swelling.
